A veteran of the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association has found a new home.
Nalini Maharaj has signed with the expansion Truro Tidal Queens in anticipation of their first season in the eight-team league.
Maharaj has MWBA experience with the Lake City 56ers organization when they were known as Windsor Edge and she also played with the Halifax Hornets.
‘Nalini joked about collecting jerseys in the past,’ said a release from the Truro organization. ‘She’s focused on giving back to the community and helping young athletes find their in the sport. We couldn’t be happier to have her championship pedigree and passion for the game in Truro.’
The Cape Breton native brings plenty of basketball experience with her.
She started her USPORTS career with the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women in Antigonish, NS, before joining the Dalhousie University Tigers. Maharaj would begin an Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association career with the University of King’s College Blue Devils in Halifax before earning first-team all-star honours with the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics in the Nova Scotia capital.
Her 125 points have her 56th all-time in MWBA scoring, appearing in 21 games.
Maharaj is pursuing her MBA at Dalhousie.
Truro joins the 56ers, Hornets and Halifax Thunder in the league’s Nova Scotia Division.
The New Brunswick Division features Fredericton Freeze, Miramichi Her-Icanes, Moncton Mystics and Saint John’s Port City Fog.
Regular season play begins May 2, the league’s fifth anniversary season.
