Fredericton Freeze improved to 2-1 on Friday with a 77-59 victory over visiting Port City Fog of Saint John in Maritime Women’s Basketball Association play.
The game attracted 403 fans to the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium, many of them in a celebratory weekend mood.
Port City fell to 1-1 and went behind the eight ball quickly, trailing 31-13 after 10 minutes of play.
The Fog showed some mettle in the third quarter, outscoring its hosts 20-16, but it was too little, too late.
Katie Butts put in a solid outing for Fredericton, scoring 17 points. She had nine in the opening quarter. Amanda Russell made her much anticipated return to Fredericton and scored a dozen points including six in the first frame. Eva Tumwine added 10 to the Freeze attack.
Courtney Thompson had 13 for Port City which trailed 50-26 through a half. Mackenzee Ryan added a dozen and Rachel Farwell 10.
