Miramichi Her-Icanes remain perfect at home.
The ‘Canes improved to 2-0 in Maritime Women’s Basketball Association in the friendly confines of Miramichi Valley High School on Friday, downing Moncton Mystics, 93-74, despite a league record for points from a member of the visiting squad.
Leo Elbert drained an MWBA single game points record with 35, but it wasn’t enough as the hosts had a well-balanced attack, sparked by 25 points from Lauren Rainford and 24 from Devon Lawlor. Aiden Rainford and Georgia Bell dropped a dozen apiece for Miramichi.
Elbert’s one-woman show for Moncton did get some support from Kelsey McLaughlin, who sunk 15.
Miramichi held a 43-27 lead at halftime.
The MWBA goes quiet over Victoria Day Weekend and the push for the regular season title begins in earnest.
The Her-Icanes moved to 2-3 on the season and joined idle Fredericton Freeze for third spot. Moncton fell to 1-2.
Unbeaten Halifax Thunder (3-0) and Lake City 56ers (3-1) are tied atop the standings.
