Saint John’s Port City Fog absolutely needed a win on Sunday.
They got it, in large part, thanks to Rachel Farwell, who was named the Medavie Player of the Week.
The Fog was facing an 0-2 Maritime Women’s Basketball Association trek through Nova Scotia before facing the Halifax Hornets in dire need of a win.
In dramatic fashion, Port City earned the win, came away with a 1-1 record and sit 2-2, in hot pursuit of Fredericton Freeze and tied with Miramichi Her-Icanes for the New Brunswick standings’ lead and a first-round playoff home date.
The Fog would outscore Halifax 12-3 in overtime to earn an 85-75 victory.
Farwell finished with 23 points in just over 33 minutes of floor time. She had eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Others considered for the Royale Player of the Week were Elizabeth Iseyemi of the Lake City 56ers, Sophie Atkinson from Halifax Thunder, Allie Berry of Moncton Mystics, Katie Butts from Fredericton and Eva Widmeyer of the Hornets.
Miramichi was idle last weekend.
It all leads to a major showdown Thursday night in Saint John when Farwell and the Fog hosts Fredericton.
Game time is 7 p.m. at University of New Brunswick at Saint John.
The game will be shown live on Rogers TVNB.
It will be on Rogers’ YouTube stream on Friday.
