MWBA - Maritime Womens Basketball Association

Keeping up With MWBAers

The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association is proud of all of its players, those who have played in the circuit since its inception three years ago.

As the MWBA gears up for the 2025 season next spring, it will be keeping an eye on many players who are continuing their careers with USPORTS or Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association teams.

A number of players are back in action with university pre-season games.

‘It’s such a joy to watch our young players represent their university teams at a high level of play,’ said MWBA commissioner, Jen McKenzie of Dartmouth, NS. ‘We get to see them play and develop as young women in our league for three months and it’s a proud moment for the MWBA and all of the teams to watch these athletes excel all season long.’

The MWBA will continue to follow its players at the university and professional levels this season on the website.

Some highlights from early October play included University of Ottawa Gee Gees win the University of Calgary tournament with Allie McCarthy and Bailey Russell of the MWBA’s Fredericton Freeze playing prominent roles.

McCarthy scored 62 points over the weekend as Ottawa went 3-0. Russell had 27 points and 17 rebounds over three games.

Katelyn Power of Saint Mary’s University Huskies of Halifax and her teammates had a successful weekend in Wolfville, NS, going undefeated and Grace Lancaster of University of Prince Edward Island Panthers scorched 30 points in a loss to Ottawa. Abby Miller of Miramichi Hericanes had a dozen for UPEI in that 78-68 setback.

Reigning MWBA MVP Lauren Rainford is with UPEI. She had 35 points over three games for the Panthers.

Sydney Guker-Wickie of Halifax Thunder is with Dalhousie University Tigers. She had 11 points in the Tigers 66-55 win over Queen’s University Gaels of Kingston, ON., but was injured in the tournament at UNB. The MWBA wishes her a speedy recovery.

There is more pre-season action coming over the long weekend and we will keep you in touch.
