The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association expanded from six teams to seven last year.
It had hoped there would be eight teams for the 2025 season, but the Town of Truro’s hopes to having an MWBA team fell through this week.
That means the MWBA will begin finalizing its 10-game regular season schedule, but we do know the plan is to begin action the May 2-4 weekend across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
MWBA officials had met with Truro potential partners last June in Halifax during the league’s Pro*Line Stadium Series Legacy Cup championship weekend.
Plans were to proceed with a team in Truro that would have created provincial balance with four teams in each province.
‘We held out hope as long as we possibly could, but once the calendar turns to February, you starting running into a game of time and what’s best for the league,’ said MWBA commissioner, Jen McKenzie of Dartmouth, NS. ‘We had some solid back and forth with a number of interested parties, but we just couldn’t get the deal done for 2025. There is hope we can carry some momentum and get things established this year for the 2026 season.’
This year’s Legacy Cup Final Quartet will be held in New Brunswick.
The league alternates its championship weekend between provinces.
