The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association opted for a new rule in 2026 that would see interscholastic graduating players be eligible to play in the league.
The rule was designed to help sustainability within the MWBA and continue to promote the league to young players, allowing them an opportunity to learn some valuable experience playing against older, established women.
Not all teams have added graduating seniors, but each club in the eight-team circuit is allowed up to three.
So far, so good.
In fact, the Week II Wonder Auto&Tire Player of the Week is Jesse McCarron of the Moncton Mystics.
McCarron sparked the Mystics (2-1) to an 87-69 win over Saint John’s Port City Fog last week and was solid in making teams take notice of her skillset.
She had 17 points in the win and earned 10 rebounds while collecting two steals. McCarron was also a plus 19.
The New Glasgow, NS, native has signed a Letter of Intent with the Atlantic University Sport’s Cape Breton University Capers.
Hard-working and energetic, McCarron brings a different dimension to the up-and-coming Mystics, who have a solid blend of youth and veteran savvy up and down their lineup.
Other players considered for the weekly award included Korenda Colley of Truro Tidal Queens, Lucy Beaumont of Halifax Hornets, Maheva Ngassam of Fredericton Freeze, Lexi MacInnis of Miramichi HerIcanes, Emily MacNeil of Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston and Maddy White of Halifax Thunder.
McCarron and the Mystics are back in action Thursday night when they host the Fog in a 7 p.m., clash at Crandall University.
It sets the stage for three games on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., the Battle of Highway 7 unfolds at the University of New Brunswick at Saint John.
That’s this week’s PROLINE Featured Game of the Week when the Freeze visits Port City.
At 3 p.m., Miramichi finds itself on a Nova Scotia-swing, facing the Hornets at 3 p.m. at Mount St. Vincent University.
The 5 p.m., outing unfolds in Truro at Dal Agricultural College when the host Tidal Queens welcome Lake City.
Three more tilts are set for Sunday, beginning at 2:30 p.m., with the Hornets greeting Truro at MSVU.
A pair of 3 p.m., games have Fredericton facing Moncton at Crandall University and the HerIcanes playing Lake City at Cole Harbour High School.
Thunder is off this weekend.
Thunder leads the circuit with a 4-0 record before a three-team logjam is featured for second place with 2-1 records including the Mystics, Hornets and Port City.
Freeze is 1-1, Lake City and Miramichi is 1-3 and Truro is 0-3.
