Hornets, Mystics Keep First Place Pace

Not much room at the first place inn.

There is officially a three-way points tie atop the standings in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association.

Following Sunday matinee wins by the Halifax Hornets and Moncton Mystics, both teams now have eight points, sliding into a tie with idle Halifax Thunder, all with eight points.

Thunder remains unbeaten in four outings while the Hornets and Mystics are both 4-1.

Hornets hosted Truro Tidal Queens to the Nova Scotia capital on Sunday and earned a 96-64 triumph over the expansion squad. Truro remains winless in five outings.

Ella Hoyt rattled the rim for a game-high 23 points to lift the Hornets. Samantha Monieri had 12, Samantha Russell scored 11 and Clara Gascoigne popped 10.

Nykeva Wilson-Brown sparked Truro with 17 points and Lily Newberry had 15. Courtney Cain-Nordin scored nine.

In Moncton, Maddie Eustace exploded for 35 points and Moncton turned aside Fredericton, 89-84.

The Mystics’ win sunk the Freeze record to 1-3.

Eustace’s offence was supported with 15 points from Jesse McCarron, 14 from Kate Fillmore and Eve Kalala with 10. Kalala scored three triples in the fourth quarter including a late dagger that pushed Moncton to the win.

Bailey Russell’s 20 points paced Fredericton. Maheva Ngassam had 18 and Kristen Taylor 14.

Meanwhile, in Cole Harbour, host Lake City 56ers earned an 87-62 win over Miramichi HerIcanes.

Julia Black blazed 21 points for the Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston squad. Olivia Logan had 16, Jamie-Lynn Provo sunk 14 and Emily MacNeil kept her solid scoring pace alive with 14 points.

Ava Sprague dropped 16 for Miramichi. Eden Searles scored 16, Kassidy Hamilton offered 14 and Charlee Connors had 10.
