There is one thing we know for sure about the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup Final Four.
Two teams have hoisted the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup and celebrated as Maritime Women’s Basketball Association champions.
Two other teams have not.
In fact, those two other teams have not made it to a final, but that will all change this weekend.
The MWBA hosts its championship weekend – culminating its fifth anniversary campaign – at the sparkling Richard J. Currie Center on the campus of the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
Halifax Thunder enters the fray as the No. 1 overall seed, based on regular season play and were crowned Nova Scotia Division champions. Thunder finished 9-1. Moncton Mystics finished 7-3 and arrive in Fredericton as the New Brunswick regular season title holders and are No. 2 seed. Fredericton Freeze is the host and is No. 3 overall seed after a 6-4 regular campaign. Halifax Hornets finished 5-5 and enter as No. 4 seed.
The league uses overall regular season finishes to determine its playoff seeds.
All four teams survived sudden-death provincial semifinals to get to the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup.
Both semifinals are intriguing.
None of the teams are strangers.
Thunder swept the regular season series with city rival Hornets, winning both games.
The Thunder – which has won the title in 2023 and 2023 – defeated the Hornets 72-55 on June 3 and earned a 78-63 victory on May 9.
It will be the first time the two Halifax-based teams have met in the post-season since the Hornets defeated Thunder in the inaugural championship game back in 2022.
Thunder defeated Truro Tidal Queens in is provincial semifinal and the Hornets ousted Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston to punch their ticket.
Game time is 5 p.m.
The second semifinal of opening night features a pair of rivals who have never made it to the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup final, so one streak will end.
Moncton is making its first post-season appearance since 2023.
The Mystics defeated Fredericton 89-84 at home back on May 17 before the Freeze posted a 105-78 victory in the provincial capital on June 4.
Moncton downed 2025 MWBA champion Miramichi HerIcanes in its provincial semifinal. Fredericton eliminated Port City Fog of Saint John in its playoff game.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
