The Port City Fog hadn’t played in almost two weeks.

It certainly didn’t show early. Or late.

Port City hammered home 24 first quarter points and carried that momentum to an eventual 74-66 Maritime Women’s Basketball Association win over the visiting Moncton Mystics on Thursday.

The game was played at the University of New Brunswick at Saint John.

The Fog used the win to climb into a tie with the idle Fredericton Freeze for second place in the six-team circuit. Both teams sport identical 4-2 records.

Moncton slipped to 2-4 and sits tied for fourth with idle Halifax Hornets.

As she has done so often this season, Kaylee Kilpatrick powered Port City in front of over 225 fans. The former professional drilled 28 points to pave the way. Courtney Thompson, a former Atlantic University Sport scoring champion with the Dalhousie University Tigers, had 13. Reese Baxendale added 10 and Grace Tilley sunk nine.

Abby Miller, the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association player of the year last season with the Mount Allison University Mounties, sparked Moncton with 17 points. Lia St. Pierre hooped 10. Leonie Elbert scored nine and Jenna Jones had eight for Moncton.

Port City and Moncton join all six MWBA teams this weekend for tournament session play in Halifax at Saint Mary’s University.
