The Halifax Hornets have added a new face and a familiar face to their Maritime Women’s Basketball Association lineup.

The Hornets, the inaugural MWBA PROLINE Legacy Cup champions in 2022, are assembling a formidable entrant.

Arriving in Hornets’ colours for the league’s fifth anniversary season is Atlantic University Sport reigning MVP Sami Russell.

Russell paced the AUS in scoring during the 2025-26 campaign with the Acadia University Axewomen, averaging 16.4 points per game. She also paced the Axewomen with 8.4 rebounds an outing and offered 3.9 assists per game.

The USPORTS All-Canadian was also named Acadia’s outstanding athlete of the year.

The six-foot wing from Dartmouth, NS, is not a stranger to the MWBA.

Russell amassed 197 points over two seasons with the Halifax Thunder, sitting 25th overall in league scoring history. She averaged 11.6 points a game last season.

Meanwhile, Maddy Hiscock will return for third season in the MWBA, all with the Hornets.

The former Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national scholar, Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association defensive player of the year and second team all-star with Mount St. Vincent University Mystics, will bring a strong leadership role to the Hornets.

The New Brunswick product has appeared in 34 MWBA games.
