It took a lot longer than the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association thought it would, but the Halifax Hornets are off the schnide.

Halifax, entering Sunday’s game at 0-8, took matters into their own hands and found resolve, posting a 78-72 win over Miramichi Her-Icanes, wiping out a small halftime deficit in the process.

Hometown Miramichi held a 37-36 edge through 20 minutes.

Halifax is now 1-8 while the Her-Icanes fell to 3-5.

Amanda Pearcey helped the offensive cause for the Hornets with 21 points. Eva Widmeyer had 12, Alisha McNeil hooped 11 and Aliyah Fraser scored nine.

Lauren Rainford continued to spark Miramichi with a game-high 28 points. Abby Miller struck for 13 and Bailey Henderson had 10.
