The reigning Maritime Women’s Basketball Association’s regular season champions are starting to build their 2026 roster.

Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preson has signed guard Mali Straker.

Straker played last season in the MWBA with Saint John’s Port City Fog and recently capped a five-year USPORTS career with the St. Francis Xavier University X-Women of Antigonish, NS. Straker spent one season in Ontario University Athletics with Laurentian University Voyageurs before transferring to St. FX, where she played four seasons.

The Yellowknife native is coming of a year with the X-Women where she averaged 8.4 points per game, 4.0 rebounds an outing an 1.8 assists.

Playing her first season in the MWBA last year in Saint John, she brought the Fog 7.1 points per game, 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists.

‘We are going to see some new faces with the 56ers this year and Mali is one of the first steps in a rebuild phase,’ said 56er general manager, Colter Simmonds. ‘Mali is our first signing. We like her game and experience she will bring to Lake City.’

The 56ers earned regular season championship laurels last season, but fell in the PRO⋅LINE Legacy Cup final to Miramichi Her-Icanes.
