Talk to anyone around the round table and the consensus has been clear since before the season even opened.

The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association title is up for grabs this season.

Case in point, Thursday night at Saint Mary’s University.

The visiting Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour rolled into the Nova Scotia capital and squeezed out a heartstopping 69-67 win over the two-time reigning champion Halifax Thunder.

Lake City moved to 4-1 and sole possession of first place in the seven-team MWBA. Thunder fell to 1-2.

Lauren Armstrong, coming off a 27-point outburst in a loss to Thunder on Sunday, sparked Lake City with a dozen points. Darah Fleurgin had 10 and Zoe Olscamp and Aki Kobayashi netted nine apiece.

Sandy Saunders and Aliyah Fraser sparked Halifax with 13 points each. Kiera Duffie counted a dozen and in the process became Thunder’s all-time leading scorer. Duffie entered the contest needing four points to surpass previous leader Haley McDonald.
