It’s getting close.

Very close.

The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association, some 25 months in the making, is counting down the days to its opening games.

‘It’s remarkable to think of all the meetings, all the discussions and everything that has gone in to getting us to where we can almost hear the games starting,’ said MWBA commissioner, Tasia McKenna. ‘So many people have poured their hearts and souls into this. Now, we get down to business with games starting very soon.’

Due to COVID-19 restrictions in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia during the early part of 2022, the MWBA opted to protect itself by eliminating its original single game schedule to producing three regular season and a championship weekend where all six teams will be playing.

New Brunswick and Nova Scotia teams will also play single games in home-and-home fashion to augment the weekend outings and complete the regular season.

It all means the opening weekend is May 14 and 15 in Fredericton, hosted by the Freeze.

Leo Hayes High School is the host site.

The Freeze will welcome provincial rivals Port City Fog of Saint John and Moncton Mystics along with Nova Scotia’s Windsor Edge, Halifax Thunder and Halifax Hornets.

The weekend schedule will be announced later this month.

The Hornets will host the next weekend May 28 and 29 at Mount St. Vincent University before Moncton rolls out the welcome mat June 11-12 at Harrison Trimble High School. The Final 6 will be held in Halifax June 24 to 26 at Saint Mary’s University.

Please check this website under Schedule for other games.

– Justine Colley-leger will be a part of the MWBA’s inaugural season.
