The basketballs are hitting the floors and players are going through their paces.

It’s that time of year.

Tryouts are well under in the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association and more will come as teams prepare for pre-season action.

The regular season is not far around the corner, either.

Games start counting for real on Thursday, May 2, when Halifax Hornets visit the reigning Legacy Cup champion Halifax Thunder at Saint Mary’s University.

The league’s newest member – the Miramichi Her-icanes – get their first start on the road, facing Port City Fog in Saint John at 7 p.m., on Saturday, May 4. The venue will be confirmed soon.

Fredericton Freeze opens at home on May 4 at 6 p.m., welcoming the visiting Moncton Mystics at the Richard J. Currie Center Performance Gymnasium.

The Freeze will be Miramichi’s first guests on Sunday, May 5, in a 3 p.m. game at Miramichi Valley High School.

At the same time, the Hornets open their home season against Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/East Preston at Mount St. Vincent University.

There is pre-season action as well with the first-ever Battle at the Border – Presented by McDonald’s – unfolding for the four New Brunswick teams in a neutral site.

The Town of St. Stephen, home of the World’s Oldest Basketball Court – will host the Her-icanes, Fog, Freeze and Mystics in a two-day affair April 27-28.

All games, combined with several youth games, will be played at St. Stephen High School.

The Mystics and Fog meet at 1:30 p.m. and Freeze and Miramichi battle at 4 p.m.

The winners will meet in Sunday’s 1:30 p.m. final and the consolation game is set for 11:30 a.m.

Teams will play for the World’s Oldest Basketball Court Cup.
