The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association is back.

In a big way.

What a way to start the MWBA’s second season Saturday night as the hometown Port City Fog of Saint John stormed back from a first half deficit to shock the Fredericton Freeze, 73-68, in front of 448 fans at the University of New Brunswick at Saint John.

It was the league’s season opener.

The teams meet again Sunday in Fredericton.

Game time is 1 p.m. at Fredericton High School.

Kaylee Kilpatrick had 18 points for Port City. Courtney Thompson had a solid second half for the Fog, scoring 16 points. Grace Tilley canned 11 including a key three-pointer late in the fourth quarter to give Port City the lead.

Kylee Speedy had 15 for the Freeze which held a halftime lead of 38-26. Fredericton had fired 24 points in the opening quarter, but couldn’t hold the pace. Katie Butts scored 14 and Leah Bowers had 10.

Fredericton came out smoking, building a 24-15 lead after a quarter and upping the ante to 38-26 at the half.

The Fog started to find its swagger in the third quarter, pecking away at the deficit and climbing to within 54-48 after three quarters, completing the comeback with a decisive fourth quarter, outscoring Fredericton, 25-14.

The reigning champion Halifax Hornets kick off defence of their title in Windsor against the Edge on Sunday at 1 p.m.

That game is at Avon View High School.
