The Halifax Thunder has been an amazing story since the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association launched in 2022.

There is a Thunder aura across the MWBA and why not?

The franchise has never lost a regular season game over three seasons.

Let that sink in.

Yes, there have been some battles including a pair of two point wins this season, but it doesn’t matter. The team finds a way to win.

The reigning Pro*Line Stadium Legacy Cup champions have but one loss, albeit a large one, losing to city rival Halifax Hornets in the inaugural season final.

The chance to repeat, however, officially begins Tuesday night in Thunder’s own barn.

It’s an all Halifax clash to kick off the post-season in Nova Scotia when the Hornets slide into Saint Mary’s University for a 7 p.m. date with Thunder.

At the same time, there will be playoff games unfolding in New Brunswick.

Fredericton Freeze host Moncton Mystics at the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium and Port City Fog welcomes Miramichi Her-Icanes to University of New Brunswick at Saint John.

Both provinces have different routes to try and earn a berth in the Pro*Line Stadium Legacy Cup Final Quartet this Saturday to Sunday at Dalhousie University in Halifax.

We’ll begin in the Bluenose Province.

Thunder finished 10-0 and will face a Hornets team that finished a surprising 1-9 considering the wealth of talent it possesses. In fact, the Hornets gave Thunder all it could handle June 16 in a very entertaining, 99-87 setback.

The winner of the Thunder-Hornets game proceeds directly to championship weekend.

Sitting back and taking all of this is in is the idle Lake City 56ers (6-4) of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour. As the second Nova Scotia seed, the 56ers will welcome the loser of Tuesday’s game to the Zatzman Sportsplex gymnasium on Thursday night.

The winner of that game, set to start at 7 p.m., will advance to the final weekend.

In New Brunswick, with its four teams, there are two sudden-death post-season games unfolding with the Freeze-Moncton and Fog-Miramichi clashes.

The winner of those games punches their ticket for a trip to Halifax to create the four-team final.

The playoff matchups at Pro*Line Stadium Legacy Cup will have the top overall seed play the lowest seed while second and third seeds will meet.

The first semifinal is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday followed by the other outing at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a third place game Sunday followed by the championship.
