Excitement abounds.

Throughout Truro and Colchester County and certainly thoughout the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association and its legions of fans.

As the MWBA prepares for its fifth season next May, the inclusion of the newly-minted Truro Tidal Queens of Colchester County, sprouts the league to its eighth team, with four squads in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

The nickname Tidal Queens was submitted by Jessica Quillan, who won two season tickets to the franchise’s first season.

Dozens of suggested nicknames poured in for the contest under 902 Hoops, co-owned by Robbie McGee and Cindy MacNeil. Once the suggest names came in, there was a vote for the favourite, leading to the christening of the Tidal Queens.

‘We’re so excited to be part of such an amazing organization,’ said MacNeil. ‘We’re incredibly grateful and cannot wait to get started representing Truro and Colchester County.’

Truro will join Halifax Hornets, Halifax Thunder and Lake City 56ers of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston in the Nova Scotia Division.

The New Brunswick Division features Fredericton Freeze, Moncton Mystics, Miramichi Her-icanes and Saint John’s Port City Fog.

Miramichi is the reigning champion, winning the 2025 PROLINE Legacy Cup in a thrilling overtime final over regular season champion Lake City.

‘This is a new chapter for women’s basketball in the Colchester County region,’ said McGee. ‘There are so many firsts waiting for us. First roster. First home game. From local gyms to the MWBA stage, the Tidal Queens are here to inspire the next generation, showcase elite women’s talent and put Truro and Colchester County on the basketball map.’

The Tidal Queens earned a whopping 78 per cent of the popular vote in the name the team contest.

‘We are truly excited with anticipation of the Tidal Queens coming into Colchester County,’ said MWBA commissioner, Jen Lloyd of Dartmouth. ‘We have wanted an eighth team since Miramichi came into existence two years ago and now we have the balance. We are not going to grow for the sake of balance. But we found individuals in Robbie and Cindy and their crew of supporters that know the game and know it’s also a business. The location is really good to alleviate three of our teams based in Halifax Regional Municipality. We’re all fired up for the spring.’

The MWBA is anticipating opening its season the first weekend of May,
