Fog Outlasts Hosts in Thriller

Do you want to talk about a thriller?

Well, let’s chat about what unfolded in Moncton on Thursday in Maritime Women’s Basketball Association play.

Mercy.

At the end of the night – in front of packed crowd at Harrison Trimble High School – the visiting Port City Fog survived a wild 98-95 overtime win over the host Moncton Mystics.

It was the first-ever MWBA overtime game and it will go down as a classic.

The Mystics tied the game 85-85 with less than four seconds to play to send the game into overtime and send the fans into a frenzy.

Late in the extra session, Moncton had possession, but a wild scramble broke out at half court. Bodies were on the floor and Port City’s Bailey Henderson emerged with the ball out of the fracas and would score a layup with 11.4 seconds to play to give the Fog a dramatic 97-95 lead.

The Mystics had a chance to tie or take the lead, but a three-point bid went awry.

Port City’s Grace Tilley sunk a last second free throw for the 98th point.

Tilley pumped 25 for Port City to lead the way. Kaylee Kilpatrick knocked down 22, Reese Baxendale had 21 and Henderson finished with 10, none bigger than the game-winning layup.

Leo Elbert drilled 26 for the Mystics. Allie Berry had 23 and Jenna Jones had a dozen.

The two teams will decompress now and prepare for the weekend with all six MWBA teams gathering in Fredericton for six games.
