Thunder Brings Down Curtain With Triumph

Halifax Thunder defeated visiting Port City Fog of Saint John, 87-57, on Sunday in Maritime Women’s Basketball Association action.

And with that, the end of the Season V regular season has arrived.

On to the post-season and the right to be one of four teams attending the PRO•LINE Legacy Cup championship in Fredericton from June 20 to 21 at the Richard J. Currie Center.

Thunder (9-1) will enter as top seed in the Nova Scotia Division and face Truro Tidal Queens (0-10) in one sudden-death semifinal. The other semifinal will be played between second place Halifax Hornets (6-4) and third spot Lake City 56ers (5-5) of Dartmouth/Cole Harbour/Preston.

Dates and times will be announced soon for those two games.

Against Port City, a balanced offence lifted Halifax to its ninth win of the season in 10 outings.

Sophie Atkinson, Sandy Saunders and Elizabeth Beals-Iseyemi all scored nine points for Thunder. Maddy White and Kali Grootenboer had eight apiece and Justine Colley-Leger scored seven.

Celine Sterckel paced all scorers with 16 points for Port City. Grace Tilley and Neve Pearson had eight apiece.

Port City finished third in the New Brunswick Division and will face second-seed Fredericton Freeze next Sunday in a sudden-death semifinal. Game time is tentatively scheduled for 6:30 p.m., at Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium.

First seed Moncton Mystics will host fourth seed Miramichi HerIcanes in the other NB semifinal.
