Ann Bastien is one of the Maritime Women’s Basketball Association’s most explosive talents.
And you won’t hear her barking at officials, either.
Mainly because Bastien is certainly an up-and-coming official to go along with her high-energy style on the MWBA court with the Fredericton Freeze and with the Atlantic University Sport’s reigning champion University of New Brunswick Reds.
The Quebec product – she hails from Terrebonne – was one of half a dozen recipients of the Canadian Amateur Basketball Officials’ Ritchie-Nicurity Scholarship, a nation-wide open competition for student-athletes who are also involved in officiating.
There is also a New Brunswick connection to the scholarship.
The scholarships were created to honour Bill Ritchie of New Brunswick and Bryan Nicurity of Saskatchewan, both of whom are past Presidents of CABO and both Ted Earley Award recipients. Both Ritchoe and Nicurity are honoured members of the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame.
Bastien is registered with the New Brunswick Association of Approved Basketball Officials.
She does a number of spring and summer competitions, based out of Fredericton.
Bastien has played in 17 career games with the Freeze and sits 10th all-time in franchise scoring.
She has played in 65 career games with UNB, logging just under 1,200 minutes, racking up 149 assists and 186 career rebounds. Her quick hands have netter her 61 career steals in the AUS.
Bastien was named a second team MWBA all-star this past season.
